The Board of Mayor and Aldermen has approved a $1.35 million contract for the widening and reconstruction of Wolf River Blvd. between Bray Station Road and Still Wind Drive.
Board members voted unanimously to award the contract to Madden Phillips Construction Monday night during their regularly scheduled meeting. Mayor Stan Joyner and Alderman John Worley recused themselves.
The half-mile segment of the project is currently a two lane, undivided road.
The project includes the construction of two new eastbound lanes, with a bike lane, and a curbed median with left turn lanes at the three intersections.
Town Engineer Dale Perryman cited safety as one primary reason for the project.
“The current two-lane facility lacks adequate capacity and is deteriorating,” he said. “Records indicate a total of five accidents have occurred along this segment since 2013 at the Still Wind and Cypress Springs intersections.”
Perryman said the project, which was designed “in-house,” will “improve public safety, provide additional roadway capacity, create new bicycle and pedestrian lanes and enhance aesthetics in the area.”
He noted that, between 2006 and 2013, the average number of daily trips on the segment Wolf River Blvd. increased from 3,057 to 10,763.
“This traffic growth is attributable to the new homes constructed in Creekside and other subdivisions.”
The Wolf River Blvd. extension through Germantown, which was finished two years ago, could be another factor, he noted.
The Stables subdivision, which is planned for 182 single family homes, is also developing along the southern side of Wolf River Blvd.
Madden Phillips is currently working on the Byhalia Road widening project and was recently awarded a contract with Collierville for the Shelby Drive transition project. Because of the contractor’s current workload and the time sensitivity of the Wolf River Blvd. widening project Madden Phillips has acknowledged that is could be liable for liquidated damages is the project doesn’t meet deadline.
The project is slated for completion in six months.
