Houston High School was one of only four area teams to stay undefeated on the season Friday night after beating Bartlett High 35-9 at home in 2013 Homecoming game.
After falling behind early, the Mustangs scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to gain momentum. Two more touchdowns in the third quarter put the game out of reach.
Houston’s running back tandem of Malik Elion and Walker Lamberth scored three touchdowns while running for a combined 265 yards and averaging 10 yards per carry in the game.
Quarterback Jared Schmidt was just as impressive. The junior threw for nearly 160 yards and two touchdowns.
With Bartlett junior Austin Kellon getting his first start under center, the Panthers went 80 yards in 10 plays to open the game and an early 6-0 lead.
Braylon Porter had a pair of 16-yard scampers and Kellon found Jay Martin twice before going five yards on a quarterback keeper.
Neither team could get on track offensively. Houston used the legs of Elion to march to the Panther red zone but Elion coughed up the pigskin at the 21.
Five plays later and Houston defender Malvin Gipson steps in front of a Kellon pass to put the Mustangs in business.
Elion was once again the workhorse carrying five times for 33 yards before quarterback Schmidt found Chase Moss-Pioreck for a 22-yard scoring strike and a 7-6 lead.
Schmidt and Pioreck hooked up again one series later on a 51-yard score and went up 21-6 minutes later when Lamberth, taking over behind center, went five yards on a keeper  as the half came to a close.
Big plays continued to haunt the Panther defense in the third quarter. Lamberth got his second score of the game from 67 yards on the third play from scrimmage and while Bartlett dominated the clock, the Mustangs made the big stops.
Drew Hollis connected on a 22-yard field goal as time was running out to conclude the scoring.
“I thought Austin (Kellon) did a good job at quarterback,” Bartlett Coach Mike McFerran said of his junior signal caller. “We dropped five or six passes but he threw the ball well.”
The first-year coach also commended his defensive effort. “We shut down their run but Houston is very two-dimensional,” McFerran said. “They have two 6-foot-5-inches tight ends and a couple of wideouts that can run. They work play action and they run probably the most sets of any team we’ve faced.”
The Mustangs will play at Southwind (2-3). The Jaguars are coming off of a 52-12 loss to No. 25 ranked Trezevant.
