Stewart returns to BCS as head coach
Briarcrest Christian School has announced that Brian Stewart will be named the school’s new head football coach and high school dean of students.
Stewart, who began his tea
ching and coaching career at Briarcrest in 1996, resigned as MiddleTennesseeChristianSchool football and baseball coach last Thursday and accepted the Briarcrest Christian football coaching position.
During his years at Briarcrest, Stewart assisted former head coach Hugh Freeze and the Saints football team to five regional championships and four state championship appearances. Both Stewart and Freeze grew up in Independence, Miss.
“Briarcrest is a very special place for a lot of reasons,” Stewart said. “I grew up 35 to 40 minutes from Memphis.”
Stewart also had a successful tenure as head basketball coach at Briarcrest in the late 90s through 2002, leading the team to two consecutive state finals.
After seven years at JacksonChristianSchool, Stewart was named head football and baseball coach at MiddleTennesseeChristianSchool in Murfreesboro. Stewart led MTCS back to the TSSAA high school football playoffs for the first time since 2010, going 6-5 in 2013. He went 7-24 in three seasons at MTCS and is 45-47 as a head football coach.
“Coach Stewart brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the position,” said Mark Merrill, Briarcrest president. “We are pleased to have him rejoin our staff at Briarcrest. We are excited about his leadership in continuing to enhance what is already a strong athletic program.”
Stewart and his wife, Sandy, have two daughters who will attend Briarcrest.
