Defense lifts Dragons over Wooddale

With the sky hurling rain, the Collierville Dragons relied on their sturdy defense Friday night to defeat Wooddale 16-6 at home and improve to 4-1 on the season.
While the Cardinals managed more than 300 yards in the game, two fizzled red zone appearances doomed Wooddale’s aggressive attack.
Collierville got on the score board first with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Alex Hicks to Drew Van De Vuurst. The extra point kick was blocked.
Hicks finished the night with 103 passing yards. The non-stop rain clearly influenced the junior quarterback, as he completed 32 percent of his passes.
The Dragons scored once more in the first half on a 41-yard field goal courtesy of Brady Thornberry.
Wooddale scored its only touchdown of the game in the second quarter on a pass from Brandon Robinson to Jacques LeMassi.
Momentum could have shifted in the second half after the Cardinals blocked a field goal attempt and found themselves on Collierville’s 4-yard line. But the Dragon’s defense didn’t break and eventually forced a turnover on downs.
Collierville finished the contest with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Hicks to JV Springer.
The Dragons will not play this Friday.
