The Houston girls varsity basketball extended its win streak to 11 by narrowly beating Collierville 58-55 on Friday night at home.

The Lady Mustangs, who haven’t lost a game since December, were down 32-29 at halftime. However, a 15-7 run in the third quarter helped them gain momentum as they picked up their 20th win of the season.

Houston’s juniors led the way for the Mustangs on a Senior Night designated for recognizing the team’s lone upperclassman, Kelsey Trice, who chipped in 2 rebounds and 2 assists in the game.

Guard Jayla Hemingway had 23 points and 7 rebounds in the game, while fellow juniors Destinee Wells and Madison Griggs combined for 25 points against rival Collierville (15-8), which had just dominated Germantown 66-10 two days earlier.

This was the second match between the Dragons and Mustangs this month, with Houston claiming a 72-55 victory on Feb. 2.

Both teams will enter the Dist. 15 AAA tournament as the top two seeds this week. Houston is a perfect 10-0 in district play this season and Collierville is 7-3.

Collierville will play the winner of the Germantown v. Southwind game on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and Houston will play the winner of the Kirby v. Ridgeway game at 3 p.m. earlier that day.
