Early voting turnout highest in Collierville, Germantown

Although early voter turnout was low, a steady stream of citizens lined up at several popular polling places from July15-30. Winston Owens cast his votes at Bellevue Baptist Church. "Voting is my civic duty," he said.

The Shelby County Election Commission announced Monday that 43,912 residents took advantage of the two-week early voting period before the Aug. 4 election.

New Bethel Church in Germantown had the highest early voter turnout in the county, with 3,345 residents casting their ballots.

Linda Phillips, administrator of elections for SCEC, made plans for 70,000, though she didn’t necessarily expect that many people to show up.
“I always over plan,” she said.

Collierville Church of Christ saw its largest turnout on July 29, when 465 voters showed up. A total of 3,274 residents cast their votes at the church from July 15-30, the third most among Shelby County polling posts. Bethel Church had 3,288 voters.

While the turnout was somewhat lower than she had hoped, she said she believes there’s a reason for that.

“I think so many people are focused on the presidential election in November that they didn’t pay as much attention to the state and county races,” she said.

Phillips said she she has planned for a turnout of 90,000 on Aug. 4, and hopes that many people will vote.

She has used that number in making the decision of how many machine to allocate to different precinct around the county.

Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. on Aug. 4 for the state primary and county general election.
