Jobless rates in Collierville, Germantown lowest in Shelby County


Collierville and Germantown shared the lowest unemployment rates in Shelby County through the month of May.

According to data released last week by the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development, the municipalities had a May rate of 3.1 percent, or one percent point below the state average of 4.1 percent.

Collierville’s rate mimicked the previous month and Germantown’s was one tenth of a percent below April’s rate of 3.2 percent.

Bartlett’s rate in May was 3.5 percent and Memphis was at 4.8 percent, the highest among Tennessee cities with a population of more than 25,000.

Collierville and Germantown also shared a jobless rate of 4.8 percent in May 2015. The Memphis rate during that same period was 7.4 percent.

Collierville’s labor force is estimated at 24,600. Germantown’s is 19,630.

At 2.6 percent, Franklin and Spring Hill had the lowest rates in the state.

The national rate was 4.7 percent in May, down from 5 percent in April.
