Collierville jobless rate slightly up in May

Collierville’s unemployment rate rose last month, joining a trend the rest of the state also followed.

The town posted a 4.9 percent employment rate in May, a two-fifths of a percentage point increase since April 2015. Out of a possible workforce of 23,830, 22,670 workers claimed employment, leaving 1,160 jobless.

Although the rate crept up since April, the rate has actually decreased since May 2014. Last year’s rate of 5.2 percent was three-tenths of a percentage point higher than the rate last month.
The Memphis area had an unemployment rate of 5.9, six tenths of a percentage point better than its March figure.

Shelby County as a whole had a 6.2-percent unemployment rate, five tenths of a percentage point better than March and nearly a whole point better than this time last year.

Other Shelby county cities of 25,000 or more people, Bartlett and Germantown, saw similar drops as Collierville.
