Hinton Park gets thumbs up

The Collierville Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved a contract Monday night for the construction of Hinton Park on East Holmes Road.
Board members voted unanimously in favor of a $2.8 million construction contract with Wagner General Contractors.
Nearly 10 years ago, the town purchased 109.acres of land at Fleming and Holmes roads with the intention of creating a park. In 2009, the board authorized the development of a conceptual design plan for the park. However, economic conditions convinced the board to postpone funding the project until the town could pay cash to build the park.
“Funds have been accumulating for several years for the project,” said Chip Petersen, director of the town’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department.
Design and development documents were completed last year and the board funded $2.27 million for the park in the 2014 budget.
The property, which Petersen called “basic raw land,” was annexed into the town in 2011.
“It should be noted that this is farm land,” he said. “It is not like adding improvements to Cox or Johnson Parks. We are starting at the beginning here. A lot of the work is infrastructure work.”
Petersen said the first phase of the park project will include digging a five-acre, 10-foot deep lake, constructing an access road called Hinton Loop, and building playgrounds, a nine-hole frisbee golf course and a climbing hill. The man-made lake at Johnson Park is 3.2 acres.
