Board to vote on car sales

The Collierville Board of Mayor and Aldermen will consider allowing the sale of classic cars and the rental of moving trucks from a storage warehouse at the corner of Eastley and Washington Monday night during their regularly scheduled meeting.
Board members will decide whether to approve a conditional use permit for V.I.P. Indoor Storage on 89 Eastley Street. The warehouse building, which is currently zoned for general industrial, is used for storing boats, recreational vehicles and other equipment.
Built in 1980, the warehouse was renovated last year for the purpose of leasing a portion of the space to other tenants.
Kevin Caffman, the president of Art & Speed Inc., is interested in leasing space to sell “vintage, classic, exotic and luxury vehicles, along with transportation art.”
Caffman said that the business will be operated “entirely from within the current structure, with no outdoor sales or display.”
A separate permit is also being sought for the rental of moving equipment by potential lessee U-Haul.
The U-Haul application specifies that the equipment will be stored indoors and that all “activity related to the equipment shall occur indoors, with the exception of attaching and returning equipment.”
The U-Haul rental area will consume around 1/3 of the warehouse, which is located on 6.9 acres.
Art & Speed Inc. is currently located in Cordova, which Caffman said is “not really adequate at this time.”
Caffman said there is a need for a vintage car business in the Collierville area. He also said the showroom concept would be similar to that of a museum.
Art & Speed’s website states that the business offers “fine collectible automobiles, from original survivor to quality driver, show and investment cars.”
“We specialize in muscle cars, 50s and 60s classics, as well as modern performance, luxury and exotic cars,” it states.
The Planning Commission unanimously recommended both conditional use permits at its June 6 meeting.
