A wake with birthday cake

Former readers of the now defunct Cordova Beacon may remember an article about a young couple who got engaged underwater.
In full scuba gear, the Cordova residents, Mark and Kristie Carder pulled off the engagement stunt in August 1997. In March 1998, the daring couple married at Bellevue Baptist Church and exited the wedding in a hot air balloon. The couple will soon celebrate their 15th wedding anniversary.
In true Carder fashion, Mark pulled a fast one on Kristie’s 40th birthday recently. With help from Mark’s sister-in-law Kim McKinley, mock funerary arrangements were made at Logan’s Roadhouse. As a hearse waited outside the restaurant, inside a party with funeral overtones commenced, complete with a 42” custom casket in which Kristie sat while friends and family gathered and she blew out the candles.
‘Last rites’ were performed and pallbearers carried the coffin to the hearse.
“Three children and 14 happy years ago we married,” said Mark. “I hope she doesn’t kill me for this.”
While the adults were in ‘mourning’ at the party, grandparents Jim and Barbara Carder of Collierville baby-sat the three children, Abbie, Ethan and Eli.
Fortunately for Mark, the only place the hearse took anyone was to the movie theatre for a late show.  And the only thing laid to rest was a fun filled birthday.

Kristie Carder sits in a casket holding her birthday cake that reads, “don’t think of turning 40 as being over the hill…think of it as picking up speed. Happy Birthday Kristie.” Husband, Mark Carder, orchestrated the event that was celebrated with friends and family.
